Sunday, October 25, 2009 from 8:00 AM - 4:00 AM (ET)

Here in the New England landscape we are surrounded by stone walls of all shapes and fashions, including the more modern walls of stone and mortar, building veneer and cement products. But have you ever wondered how the old time walls still stand without any mortar tying the structure together? In this workshop, participants will learn about the proper methods to prepare and construct a dry stack (mortar less) stone wall with a focus on creating walls with stair returns.
LOCATION: Virginia Thurston Healing Garden
145 Bolton Road
Harvard, MA 01451
(THIS WORKSHOP HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED TO
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2009)
Program Description
Guest Presenter: Brian Fairfield, Stone Mason, Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain
Brian Fairfield, who holds the intermediate certificate for stone wall building through the Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain, has been collecting, hefting, breaking, shaping, splitting and most importantly stacking stone throughout his home state of Maine for over ten years. In this workshop, Brian will pass along his knowledge of his art as he shows you how to properly prepare and create a stone wall that requires no mortar yet is both aesthetically pleasing and structurally sound.
The main portion of this wall build workshop will focus on the stair returns and the center section of a large dry stack retaining wall that is being constructed to benefit the Virginia Thurston Healing Garden in Harvard, MA, a healing center for women with breast cancer. This wall, which is much needed after the construction of the gorgeous new center, will both retain the back property elevation gain and serve as the defining center access for the future back gardens.
So join us for a day of learning, hard work and a “ton” of fun! Lunch is included with your registration.
All attendees will be required to sign a liability waiver in advance of participating.
